Walking the Walls of Dubrovnik

Today we are in Dubrovnik where the city walls built between the 13th and 16th centuries are still intact.  They are Dubrovnik’s main claim to fame enclosing the city in a curtain of stone over 2 km long and up to 25 metres high.  There are 2 round towers, 14 square towers, 2 corner fortifications and a large fortress.

This is close to where we entered the old town and ascended the walls

We walked the entire length which does not sound very difficult but most of the time you are going up or down steep steps but the view is stunning looking one way out over the harbour and the other way over the rooftops and into churches and houses.

                                                            View through the walls

It was very hot while we walked along the wall but not long after we descended, the heavens opened and we all ran for cover and headed back to the yacht for lunch.  We sat on the covered verandah for lunch but then retreated back inside as the heavy rain beat in across the covered deck.

This evening a special event has been planned with wine tasting, cocktails, folk dancing and singing in a park looking down over the city of Dubrovnik.  The weather seems to have cleared so we hope it will still go ahead.

We are doing a lot of walking and feel that we are shrinking! We are taking care to keep well hydrated!

Tomorrow is a day at sea before we arrive in Sicily
