Driving in Devon

We departed from Poole with our destination being the seafront at Torquay. We first explored the huge harbour of Poole, one of the largest in England. We looked across the water to Brownsea Island the site of the first Scout camp. It was a very large harbour but not enough appeal to go out on it! It simply was not warm enough although some of the locals are showing bare flesh.

Gail at the old Powder Store. When ships came into the harbour they stored the gunpowder so that they didn't blow up the port! That is Brownsea Island in the background.

We drove on to Corfe Castle an important site from the English Civil War. It stands in ruins on the top of the hill with remnants of towers reaching for the sky.

We walked past this pretty little bridge on the way to the castle.

This photo has it all..the steam train, the "Whistle" station, the castle and of course it has Gail

We were behind schedule so almost gave Lyme Regis a miss as some of the seafront towns have been disappointing. We loved this one as it was not so Fun fair oriented. On the way we stopped at Bridport for the Wednesday Market Day. An interesting town although we spent most of our visit in a pub for lunch.

Lyme Regis is on the Jurassic Coast but as it was too cold to beachcomb we checked out the Fossil shops.

A few days ago we spoke to an English gentleman who was on his way to Exeter to attend a Cathedral reunion of Choristers. We called in to the cathedral on his recommendation and he was not exaggerating. It is stunning. The structure of the vaulted ceilings is amazing.

More children's literature trivia for you - Corfe Castle was Enid Blyton's model for Kirin Castle on Kirin Island.
