Bath

We had a long drive from Cornwall up to Bath but managed to have a full afternoon in the beautiful city of Bath. It is the mix of Roman and Georgian Britain that gives Bath its charm. We started in Roman times with a visit to the Roman baths. They are a large complex with many different rooms and underground chambers as well as the famous outdoor baths. Since we were here the displays have been enhanced with modern holograms and much more. We rather liked the old ruins au natural without nude roman's of the hologram variety!
We visited the Cathedral with it's architectural magnificence and the beautiful buildings of the "Circus" and the Royal Crescent along with the Assembly rooms.

                                                       Gail meets a Roman Governor.

Gail and Rob on the terrace above the main spa.

                                                                One of the spa pools.

                                                          The head of Sulis Minerva.

Gail at the main Roman bath

From the Roman baths we had a great view of the Bath Cathedral.

                                                          Details of the Cathedral ceiling.

We then walked up to look at the stunning Georgian architecture in 'The Circus' and the Royal crescent.

This is a wonderful circular group of three storey buildings that comprise the 'circus'. Rich people came to stay in them during the winter months.

Don't rest on those sharp spikes! This is outside the Royal crescent and only residents are allowed on the lawn. The spikes are to stop you climbing over!

One of the houses is open as a museum. This is the dining table loaded with Georgian desserts.

In the house was a curio cabinet. This is a dog tooth purse. It would make a great gift for Christmas!

You have seen hamster wheels. This is a device where a dog is placed in a wheel and through a series of gears it turns the spit to cook the roast. What else could we use for the BBQ spit?

Haha you wouldn't get cats turning spits! They'd be making people do it and cutting them tidbits! The ones they had on sale at Aldi this week plugged into the mains. :-)
Mum, do you feel a great Georgette Heyer reread coming on when you get home?
