Copalita

We arrived in Santa Cruz in Huatulco, Mexico and set off to visit the archaeological site of Copalita.  This historic town was only recently discovered and is still being explored.

It dates from the Maya and Olmec civilizations from over 2,000 years ago.  The site sprawls over 30 acres but only some major landmarks have been cleared to date.

We negotiated a taxi to take us the 15 km to the archaeological park and to pick us up later.

At the moment we are sitting in a hotel back near the ship so we decided to post this while we had good wifi before we explore the local stalls and the beach.

This is a little of what we saw in Copalita.

                                                            The Serpent Temple

The Ball Court.More than just a game!

                                                           The Main Pyramid.

We climbed the steep hill in the heat to have views over the coast and the mouth of the Copolita River.
We did see lots of wildlife and owls and flamingos

                                                         Flamingos in the marshes.

From the viewpoint we could look down on the place of sacrifices high on the cliffside.

The sacrificial stone is at the top of the cliff.

We also visited the museum with its small but impressive collection from the site. These are just a few:

We think that this is Maya.

                                                               Wonderful ceramics.

                                                  Skull decorated with ceramics.

The grounds were very tropical with lush vegetation...and lots of mosquitoes

                                                              Beautiful colours

                                                       Looking out for mosquitoes!
