To the Top of Jungfraujoch

Our day started with a train trip from Lucerne so when we arrived in the early morning we walked to our hotel and checked in. There was an hour before the next train so no great rush. You need a timed ticket to go up the final leg and we had time to spare.

From our base at Interlaken we started our trip to the "Top of Europe". Jungfrau is not the highest peak. That honour goes to the Russians or the French with Mt Blanc if you exclude the Russians.
The first leg was to Grindelwald. This section had great views and we could look up at the mountains.

Wonderful little villages with great backdrops.

We stopped at Grindelwald to look around this pretty little town. Found a nice spot for refreshments.

Above is the land of permanent snow and ice. A warm sunny day with ice up above.

Our next leg was up to Kleine Scheidegg. It is amazing how trains can go up such gradients! Some excellent scenery on this leg.

In the photo is a para glider. The launch from very high up!

and we were soon above the tree line.

The train  powers on and is soon to go through an avalanche chute.

                                                                    Up we go!

Very close to the final leg.

The final train to Jungfraujoch spends most of the time in tunnels so views only on the first section.

                                                   Just bare rock and ice.

You can get off the train at this spot and do the Eiger Trail. We thought about an assault on the North Face but not for long!

Reaching the top you are in an underground station but soon made our way into the complex and outside into the fresh air. The views are why we came. It is without doubt the best "Top of the world experience".

It was snow and slush underfoot so we were holding onto the do not cross rope most of the time.

We looked up to the very top station and later made it up to the very top.

Yes Robert made it as well!

                                                Not enough hands for selfies.

                                                            Gail and Europe's largest glacier.

                                                       In all its magnificence!

We did look at the other features before continuing up. The ice cave was interesting.

We sighted our first Polar bear cubs.

The views at the top station are such that you look down on mountains. The glacier is spectacular.

The glacier flows into the distance.

We were both affected by the altitude but you have to smile at this view!

Below us at the first level, kids were playing on a toboggan run. They looked like ants to us.

One last shot of the glacier!

We started to retrace our steps  but at Kleine Scheidegg we went a different way via Wengen, a town full of American college students and then from Lauterbrunnen we changed train back to Interlaken. We went through hail and heavy rain and walked back to the hotel in the rain.
This was a wonderful day!
