A Day in Basel

We had a day out in Basel. It took about 50 minutes on a fast train and this made for a good day trip from Zurich.

We walked down from the station towards the old town. Our first stop was an impressive church that is now the Open Church of St Elizabeth. Odd things in the name of Christianity!!

Gail outside the church. Looks like she is waiting for Dan Brown.

We walked through the shopping districts and eventually found the traditional market.

The fruits and vegetable were excellent as were the cheeses.

We walked down to the river. This is very close to the three way border between Switzerland, Germany and France. The border seems fairly insignificant.

Not far along was The Rathaus Very traditional as was the adjacent  city archives.

We had a brief look into the adjacent Natural History Museum. The usual animals of all kinds with some dinosaurs that were new to us along with our two favourites...

A woolly mammoth

and a Chalicotherium
He was very large and also new to us!

Next we walked to the Munster, the large Cathedral of Basel. Huge outside but rather plain inside.

Main entrance to the Munster.

We walked the city and found a small restaurant that was willing to serve a very late lunch.

After the train back to Zurich we organised a feast cooked in the limited kitchen facilities of our little kitchen. Along with local beers and wines, it was a feast that would have shocked any medieval resident .
