Bern: The Swiss capital

We caught the train from Fribourg to Bern. It is a big city with a long history and a modern commercial overlay.
The sights are often of the same  from place to place each with its historic buildings and churches, towers and fountains etc. Each one is unique and special! We walked from the station past the Church of Holy Trinity and on to the Parliament Square. There was a farm nursery set up in the square. Very similar to the Australian Parliament except they keep the animals outside! After walking through the market we went back to the Prison tower and Dutch tower.

                                                        The historic Dutch Tower.

The Prison Tower has a special clock.

Details of the clock. People come out on the hour. We passed several times but missed it!

We walked down the main street with its historic buildings to the French Church that was beautiful and the corn store..

Afternoon drinks at the historic Kornhaus.

There are dozens of old fountains and statues. This one features a bear the symbol of the city.

We walked to the end of Old Bern to the bridges with the great views from this high position.

Detail of the Hotel de Ville...The Town Hall.

Looking down on the Untertorbrucke. If you expand the photo you will see swimmers floating down the river. In  most cities people swim in the lakes and rivers. In some places they travel up river, put their clothes in special waterproof bags and float home. Look again..the kids on the bridge were about to jump in!

                                                           Such wonderful views.

We walked back via the Cathedral one of the city landmarks.

                                                                Details of the tower.

We caught the train back "home" to Fribourg and went down into the old section of town for dinner before going back to the hotel,
A very full but interesting day.
