We didn’t expect to be back in Elba ever again after our
visit in 2012. It is our 1st
port of call on the 2nd half of our cruise. Last time we were here, we visited Napoleon’s
summer residence but we were unable to see his house in the town as it was
closed for 2 years for renovations.
We walked up through the old town to Palazzina Napoleonica
Dei Mulini. It is 2 storeys with views
to both sides of the island. The rooms
were furnished and his books were still in the library. It was quite opulent and clearly demonstrated
his exile was no hardship.
We walked back down to the harbour looking at several
churches and the cathedral. It is a very
pretty town especially around the harbour and nothing like the tourist zoo that
is Capri.
Later we walked to Spiaggia Le Ghiaie, a very pretty beach that
has rounded white marble pebbles on the beach, not as good as white sand but
far better than sharp rocks. The water
was pristine aqua blue and it was a very pleasant swim.
With the yacht being moored right in the centre of town, it
was very convenient to come and go during the day.
