It was cool and windy.
We are not sure where all the “beautiful and once beautiful” people go
when they are not at the beaches of Cannes so we decided to head for Antibes. We walked through Cannes to the bus stop and
in ½ an hour had arrived in the historic centre of old Antibes.
We strolled through the old quarter absorbing the sights
and sounds of the town and especially the aromas from the fresh bread and cake
shops that were everywhere. We visited
the Saturday antique market and the fresh produce market and later, the port
and beach.
A highlight was our visit to the Picasso Museum – he lived
in Antibes just after WW 2 and most of the artwork there comes from this period.
We even bought a print there – not a
Picasso but a Russian artist who also lived in this town and was a
contemporary.
Nu bleu sur fond rouge by Nicholas de Stael will soon adorn our walls or at least a print!
Next to the museum was the cathedral which was also very
interesting.
Around the town is a series of modern bronze sculptures
that add to the vibe of the town.
The weather was closing in and we headed to the bus for
our return trip but the heavens opened as we took shelter. We were glad we had decided not to stop for
lunch in an outdoor restaurant!
Back in Cannes, we walked to the church, Notre Dame au
Voyage. It was here that Napoleon was
welcomed after fleeing from Elba. We
have just about completed following in Napoleon’s footsteps – only St. Helena to
go.
We walked past the busy harbour which contains so many boats
we could not see the water and returned on the tender to our yacht. We really enjoyed our time in Antibes and
would happily return.
Now where did we park the boat?

Antibes does look interesting, but why is the cheese so colourful?
