Sussex by the Sea

We picked up a car from Brighton to explore the Sussex coastline and surrounding countryside, cities and towns. We spent a lot of time negotiating through the towns and in traffic but managed to get to lots of wonderful locations.
Our first stop was at Lewes and its famous castle.

Lewes was the site of the Battle of Lewes in 1264 that resulted in the first English parliament in the following year.

Gail in front of the Lewes Bowling Green that was the former jousting grounds.

We drove back to the coast and stopped at the Worthing Pier.

Not as long as the pier at Brighton!

The ceiling of the Worthing English Martyrs Church

Our favourite visit for the day was to Arundel. It is a very pretty town with wonderful buildings.

A wonderful visit. The sun was still out although it was not as hot as yesterday.

The Arundel Cathedral was also one of the best that we have seen. Worth a visit.

We drove on to Bognor Regis another seaside town very similar to the others. Our final stop was at Chichester. It has a famous Cathedral. It took ages to navigate the traffic and park. It was another stunning visit .

Beautiful on the outside with the Cathedral, a huge Bell tower and beautiful cloisters and lawns.

Detail on one of the stained glass windows. Adam and Eve, an apple and the serpent.

We especially liked this gargoyle. Not a bad downpipe. Might include one in a renovation!

We are staying at a beautiful place. It is a 1900's farmhouse converted into luxury accommodation.

Arundel Castle was fictionalised as Kentisbury by E.J.Oxenjam in her Abbey books (the Abbey was Cleeve Abbey in Washford, Somerset).
