There were lots of options for our last day in Zurich. Still places to visit and museums to explore. In the end we decided to travel up to the Rheinfalls and the nearby town of Schaffhausen. We had a fast train option that didn't stop at the falls so opted for that. From the train we had a great view of the falls. They are the largest in Europe but certainly not the highest! They are historically important as the town grew up as they couldn't transport goods beyond the falls.
There are a series of viewing platforms but we decided that we has seen enough after setting foot in the town.
As you get out of the train you are into the historic centre at once. It is a real treasure. We would have loved to stay!! It has a much more relaxed feel and we wandered stopping for both morning coffee and lunch.
There are lots of towers and church steeples. This one is the Munsterkirche.
At every corner or square there seems to be a major statue or a fountain.
The water in the fountains was pristine. Good enough to drink!
We decided that after coffee we were up to climbing the steep steps to the Castle. It was steep but the views were spectacular. On each side were vineyards full of ripe fruit. Looking back was the entire town set out for us to examine.
Once inside there was a steep circular path that wove its way to the top. Once there the views were amazing.
The view as we climbed towards the top.
View from the top.
Ready to defend the Castle.
Still practising! Look at that concentration.
On the top!
Surveying the panorama.
Back down we again wandered the streets and enjoyed lunch.
Each of the buildings was special.
We had lunch and then decided that we could fit in another town just a half hour away by train.
