Heading north we followed the coast passing many small towns and fishing communities. The roads are narrow and busy so the progress was slow. We made a few stops the first being a Hindu temple.
The different gods were painted in bright colours
Hanuman, the monkey god. We were to see lots of monkeys later in the day
Our main stop for the day was the Wilpattu National Park. We transferred into "jeeps" and headed off into the rain. There had been a few showers in the morning but now the early monsoon was upon us!
We were well covered and we still had good views.
The wildlife sightings were impacted by the weather and we missed out on the leopards, sloth bears and elephants. We did see lots of animals and some beautiful birds including some rare species.
The stunning Bee Catcher.
This is the Sri Lankan National Bird.
The alert ears and eyes of the Samba deer
Spotted deer. So many but not a leopard to eat them!
We didn't see the big 3 of the park. They just might have found a spot out of the rain!
A Monitor lizard flat out in the..rain. Still a bit of heat in that huge rock!
We saw lots of crocodiles but most were small. They also have large salt water crocs!
This tortoise was digging for something to eat. There was a small croc next to him but he was too big to swallow! We also saw Star Tortoise.
Lots more birds so a few more..
Hornbills up in a dead tree.
A beautiful White Breasted Kingfisher.
The very rare Spur Fowl.
We forget this ones name but it is a big ugly vulture. It had no pickings as the leopards had not been on the job.
It was a very interesting trip if mainly on the theme "Birds of Wilpattu"

Great to see all the pictures but a pity the leopards were hiding from the rain.
