Delft, Sri Lanks

We are in Delft but not the one in the Netherlands. This is off the far north coast of Sri Lanka and so remote that there are no other tourists. We travell
ed across causeways from Jaffna and finally took a boat for about an hour and a half to reach the remote island. This had been a colonial outpost and fort of the Dutch and later the British.
The trip was interesting especially the bird life and natural environment. The locals are mainly fishermen or farmers of rice.

                                                         A beautiful Painted Stork

                                                                Local fishing boats.

A Hindu Temple that we passed on the way to Delft.

A Brahamany Kite sitting on a fishing pen.

We went across several causeways before we came to the pier. It took about 11/2 hours for the crossing on a converted fishing boat.

On the island we had a tour around by jeep to see the local sites.

On the island there were no restaurants but there was a small place to stay. We had tea at a locals house then out by jeep. One place was a large Baobab tree.

The locals use blocks of coral for buildings and fences.

Gail at the old Dutch fort. It was an interesting visit to a remote corner of Sri Lanka

Good trick to wear a nice bright top so you stand out against all the grey of the coral! Looks like an interesting place to visit and see things most tourists don't reach.
