We spent the afternoon at the Mihintale on the mountain peak. This is thought to be the meeting place between the Buddhist monk , son of the Indian ruler and King Devanamplyatissa on the introduction of Buddhism into Sri Lanka in the Third Century BC.
It was a long climb to the central place and temple entrance. We then had hundreds more steps to the various sites, hard going without shoes!
The central hall had a large reclining Buddha.
We had to climb back down the rock face and steps then go back up the other side to a large Buddha figure.
It was not an easy climb so we decided against climbing the third site..the huge rock in the background.
There were also some of the 68 caves that you could enter but they were not recommended!
On the way back we stopped to look at the memorial to the "Tamil Tiger War
