Lubeck and The Hanseatic League

We took the train up to the Baltic Coast first to Travemunde. Today this has become a spot for locals to enjoy the beach and frolic in the Baltic waters. It is summer but we are well rugged up! Even the hardy locals need a little protection from the wind si instead of hiring beach umbrellas they rent out Baltic Seaside basket chairs.

                                                          You need a little protection.

Gail on the pier. This is as close to bathing that we could manage.

There was the Lebensfreude Festival in place. Lots of alternative lifestyle options along with plenty to drink and eat..

Can you suggest what this group are doing?

We took the train back to Lubeck that was one of the major Hanseatic League cities. We spent the day walking around the old buildings and visited many. From the train you walk down to the entry gate considered to be the symbol of Lubeck.

The entry gates. This one is made from marzipan. Look and you can spot Rob.

                                                             Gail at the real gate.

We walked into the town. One of the first places that we came to was the Marionette Theatre and Museum.

They watched us through the window!

Our first church visit was St. Peters. No longer used as a church we are not sure if we just missed the market or if we visited an art installation.

                                                               What do you think?

The main building that remains from the Hanseatic trading period is the Rathaus. It dates from 1230 but was added to over the years. We took a tour so that we could go inside. We struggled a little with the German commentary.

                                                           One of the stunning facades.

The main stairway with its frescoes.

There were many paintings of the Burgomeisters. We called this the Macdonalds Hall of Fame.

The main church is St Marys close to the Town Hall.

                                                  It had huge vaulted ceilings.

                                                           Dance macabre.

Rob and the Devil

We had a late lunch and selected the Ratskeller zu Lubeck. This is located in the cellar of the  Rathaus.
