We planned to spend the afternoon visiting the Silustani
Tombs but there was major industrial action in Puno and we were stranded at our
hotel out of town. The tombs were to be a highlight but we could not even get
into town by taxi.
The boat captain from the morning visit to the floating
islands must not have been a union member so took us to the town pier. Pedicabs
were also outside the strike action and we had a 10 minute ride to the square.
All the restaurants were closed but a few had doors half open so we were able
to have a great lunch.
Back in the square we observed action Peruvian style. For a
country with such a torrid political past it was rather a tame affair. It was
all about water supply. The people want more than the current 1 hour supply per
day. Sounds reasonable!
Protesters blockade the streets
We still managed to have a look around the square and make a
few purchases. Then we had to repeat our travel path back to the hotel.
The next morning the strike action was over and we left for
Colca Canyon
