Aluxe: Animals of Palenque

We visited Aluxe, an animal rescue group near our hotel. It is a large site with a great range of animals and birds. Most have been rescued in some way and will either be released into the wild or kept if that is not viable. A few photos:

A Scarlet Macaw. They live about 50 years.

They had Jaguars, black Jaguars, Ocelots and Miniature Jaguars.

                                                                      An Ocelot.

                                                          This is a Collared Peccary.

                                                               This is a Tapir.

A Toucan. Some of the birds flew free, some were in walk through aviaries and some in                      enclosed aviaries.

                                                       There were a few crocs!

                                                                A Spoonbill.

                                                Gail with some Scarlet Macaws.

                                                                 The Flamingos.

We saw most of the animals except for the Manitee that stayed underwater!  We also read about the Green Leaf Cutter ants that we saw being very busy. They have a symbiotic relationship with an underground fungus with a nest that is very large but with just a small opening.

We finished the day with a swim and went out for dinner for a five course Maya meal. All the foods were grown by local Maya people and cannot be purchased in shops. Most unusual!

Another wonderful excursion. And Mayan food - does that mean chocolate and guaccamole?

No
It was Mayan fusion food so from various Maya communities but exceptionally traditional.
No chocolate or guacamole.
