Breathtaking Borobodur

We had an early start to reach Borobodur from the port of Semarang.  It was a 2 and a half hour drive to reach our destination in a convoy of buses with a police escort front and back.  We would never have been able to achieve this as a day visit without the police escort, as most of the time we were on the wrong side of the road passing traffic while the oncoming cars were in the gutter.  An amazing experience in its own right.

Borobodur is the largest Buddhist temple in the world, surpassing Angkor Wat in size.  It was built in about the 8th century but remained buried underground for 200 years until the early 1900s due to volcanoes and political and religious changes.  It is a stunning temple complex, impressive not only in its size but for the reliefs and the workmanship because it is built without using any adhesive.

We will let our pictures do the talking.  It was a wonderful day and very memorable.  This place was on our major bucket list of must see places to visit.

The complex of Borobodur is immense. We made it to the very top

The bas reliefs are wonderful having been restored by UNESCO

The Stupas are a real work of art.

An open Stupa showing an exposed Buddha
On the way home we stopped for a wayang demonstration
Six elephants passed us. They were enjoying the rain that had commenced
