Remembering Gallipoli

On our first trip to Turkey, we had a very moving visit to Gallipoli.

Greece gave the allies the island of Lemnos as a staging point for the offensive against Turkey in 1915.  We visited the huge harbour from where the ships left for Gallipoli and the war grave cemetery.  Inside the cemetery was a memorial to the nurses who worked at the large field hospitals on Lemnos where many of the wounded from the Gallipoli campaign were brought.

Later that night we sailed to Izmir in Turkey, not far down the coast from Gallipoli.

I bet you were glad to visit in peace rather than during the madness of ANZAC Day.
