Asia to Europe by Tram

In a world that might focus on Intercontinental Ballistic  Missiles( ICB’s), we travelled on a ICT. Our Intercontinental tram carried us from our ship moored on the Asian side of the Bosphorus  to the Old city of Istanbul in Europe. We had travelled from Spain to Portugal by train but now from Asia to Europe  and back all in one day.

As it was Friday, the mosques were closed for prayers in the morning so we started our exploring with the Basilica Cistern.  This cavernous structure has over 1000 Greek columns supporting the roof.  We followed the walkways around in the cool interior.  This area was used in a James Bond film.  We especially liked the medusa heads which decorated 2 of the columns – nobody knows quite why.

We strolled the through the Grand Bazaar with its labyrinth of covered laneways, past the carpets, fabrics, jewellery, leather etc and were totally surprised when we finally emerged without any parcels and in exactly the right place!

As the mosque was now open, we entered the courtyard and joined the queue to go inside.  It was interesting to see that everyone going in to look, joins the same queue.  The interior of the Blue Mosque is breathtaking – beautiful stained glass windows, predominantly blue, wall and ceiling tiles in blue patterns and a huge, plush red carpet on the floor.  The exterior was just as beautiful with high domes and narrow minarets.

We crossed back to the Asian side by tram.  Perhaps we might walk to Europe tomorrow.
We are back on the European side again and have spent today visiting the Topkapi Palace, home of the Sultans of the Ottoman Empire. The visit included the Treasury with loads of emeralds and rubies, thrones and the Armoury with its fascinating swords, rifles and armour all dripping with jewels.

The architecture was incredible.  We also visited the Harem and managed to get out again not enslaved or turned into a eunuch.

The castle as we approached Istanbul from the Black Sea.

This is very strange, I know I made a comment on Saturday all about the election but it seems to have vanished. Anyway Forster has voted overwhelmingly liberal, you just can't get away from those blue ribbon seats. Now I am off to watch James Bond movies to find those medusa heads!

The libs were giving out free shopping bags when I was up at Forster last. Was going to get you one but decided you may not see the humour, haha. SO instead, it is me who has a magnetic Bob Baldwin shopping list notepad on the fridge. Makes me laugh every time I write my list. Heh.
