Ancient Histria

Today we visited ancient Histria, located north of Constanta in the Danube Delta in Romania.

This ancient Greek city was established in the 7th century BC and there were also Roman remains from a later period.

To get there we drove through the very flat Delta area with its abundance of bird life and swampy terrain.  We passed freshwater lakes on 1 side and the Black Sea on the other.

The town was sited on a slight rise at the mouth of the delta.  It has since been cut off by silting.

The town is in a mainly unrestored state which makes it all the more interesting and many of the artefacts are displayed in an adjacent museum.

During the Roman period, baths and market areas were added.

The poet, Ovid was exiled here by Emperor Augustus for immoral practices  and suggestive poetry.

We sail later today for the Ukraine.

The storks nest looks a bit like our shed. Messy leaves on top and falling apart.

Now feeling an urge to read Ovid but I believe we don't have it in translation :-)
