Washington is a very modern, tourist friendly city. We love it! We are staying at Dupont Circle, a very fashionable spot on Embassy Row. We have 3 embassies as immediate neighbours, very close to the Metro and a fabulous dining precinct.
Yesterday we visited many of the museums that make up the Smithsonian. The Air and Space was outstanding ranging from the Wright's Kittyhawk, one of Amelia Earhart's planes to the full story of spaceflight.
We visited both wings of the National Gallery of Art (the 2 buildings are joined by an underground moving walkway). It has an outstanding collection - lots more Impressionists, the only Leonardo painting in the western hemisphere and lots more.
We visited the Natural History Museum to check out the dinosaurs and also a brief visit to the American Indian Museum.
We relaxed for a few minutes in the Sculpture Garden to recover from all that culture.
One end of the Mall was Capital Hill with the Congress Buildings and at the other was the Washington Monument. Both are magnificent structures but the Washington Monument was closed as it is under restoration.
After dinner, we returned to the Mall to look at these 2 structures under night lighting and walked down to the WW 2 Memorial with its magnificent floodlit fountains and then walked beside the long reflecting pool to the Lincoln Memorial.
Washington is one of the great, tourist city's of the world.
This is a plane flown by Amelia Earhart that she made record breaking flights in - not the one she disappeared in of course!
On the steps leading across to Congress. The gardens are quite magnificent contrasting with the white buildings.

I saw a really interesting doco recently about some cosmetics found on an uninhabited island in the pacific, between Hawaii and Australia, that is supposed to be proof that Amelia Earhart survived and lived as a castaway. No, not related to your post, but her plane there reminded me of it :)
I saw that too!
