We have certainly experienced a variety of transport modes today. We walked down from our hotel and caught the only bus that ran from Assissi to Perugia. We then caught a mini metro which is a one tiny driverless carriage to Pincetto (3 stops) and finally an ascensore (huge lift) up into the heart of the old town. We walked through the old streets to our hotel Morlacchi in a 400 year old building.
Perugia is a university town, the capital of Umbria, located in the green heart, the very centre of Italy. The town was buzzing and there were a lot of young women walking around beautifully dressed carrying bouquets of flowers and wearing garlands of laurel wreaths. We wondered why. We discovered it was graduation day and this was the traditional dress. The young people were delightful and while they partied, they did it in style.
We explored this gem of a city, including the cathedral and churches, the Etruscan cistern (well) and arch (2000 years old but under restoration). As good as anything were the wonderful views of the surrounding countryside seen from the old walls of the city.
We ate lunch in an outdoor restaurant which only served champagne, beer and platters of local meats and cheese – simply delicious!
She invited him to her graduation party!
