Terrific Time in Tunis

We did not expect to be back in Tunisia, one of our favourite countries from an earlier visit, but here we are here in Tunis, the capital.



After changing money, we caught the metro from the port of La Goulette into Tunis. We headed for the medina, the old town and stopped at the cathedral of St.Vincent de Paul, which was a very beautiful church but not of the same standard as the last 3 we have seen.



We walked through the myriad of alleyways that make up the souk with specialty spice shops, gold shops – where the gold is sold by weight-pottery shops, dress and shoe shops and a host of others.



We walked through the souk to the Great Mosque where Margaret and Gail were provided a covering for their heads and arms. They were mistaken for Berber women. The mosque dates from the 8th century and then we walked round to visit the associated school for boys and girls as well as a viewpoint where we looked down over the mosque and the old city.



We headed back to the metro and went up to Carthage. As time was limited, we only fitted in visits to the expansive Roman baths located adjacent to the presidential palace and a Roman villa. We still have our tickets for 6 more sites. Perhaps we can sell them on ebay!
